Where and when will the courses be offered?

Courses in our Information Technology degree programs are available at IIT's Rice Campus in Wheaton, at our Information Technology Campus in the Chicago Loop, at our Chicago Main Campus live or via videoconferencing, and at remote locations via IITV and the Internet. Courses are offered on a semester basis.

When are courses for these degree programs offered? Day, evening, weekend?

As this is a program primarily structured for working professionals, most course offerings are in the evening or on Saturday morning. To meet the needs of our full-time students, we do offer daytime classes as well, but generally these courses will be available online for part-time students.

What time and how often do classes meet?

Courses with laboratories normally run from 5:30pm to 9:30pm one evening a week; lecture-only courses normally run 6:25pm to 9:05pm one evening a week. Because of the strong hands-on emphasis of these programs, many courses will include a laboratory. Daytime courses normally will meet two days a week for 75 minutes each session.

Are courses available in the summer?

Summer courses are normally available. Courses in the summer session meet twice a week as the session is only eight weeks long.

How many classes can I take per semester?

Bachelor of Information Technology & Management students are generally expected to register for up to three classes each semester and Master of Information Technology & Management students are normally expected to enroll in two classes, but you can take as few as one course each term. Due to current course scheduling it is not normally possible to take more than five courses each semester or more that two courses in the summer session. If you are a full-time student, undergraduates must take a minimum of twelve hours per semester graduate and graduate students must take nine hours per semester.

Is the program available full and/or part-time?

Yes, both.

Can I take the entire program via the Internet or TV?

The Master of Information Technology and Management degree may be completed entirely online; please see our Online Course Availability page for more information. While it is possible to take many of our courses via television or the Internet, due to the laboratory-based, hands-on emphasis of many of our courses, it is currently not possible to complete the Bachelor of Information Technology and Management degree online or via television.

How long does the does each degree program take to complete?

The degree programs have been created principally for working professionals with the assumption that they will be taking two or three classes each semester, with possibly one class during the summer session. The Bachelor of Information Technology and Management will take eight semesters with a normal course load of three classes; this is laid out graphically in our Course of Study. As a full-time student with a course load of five courses per semester our Bachelor program can be completed in five semesters (2-1/2 years). Normal expected course loading for Master of Information Technology and Management students is two courses per semester; with this load the program will take five semesters. With a full-time course load of three classes per semester and one summer session class, the Master's program can be completed in three semesters.

How many of my community college credits will transfer to the Bachelor of Information Technology and Management?

Students will typically transfer up to sixty semester hours of community college credit and can transfer a maximum of sixty-eight semester hours. Please see our Admission Requirements page for full details.

Can I transfer graduate credit I might have into the Master of Information Technology and Management?

Transfer of a very limited number of graduate credits into our graduate program will be considered by the Admissions Committee on a case-by-case basis.

Can I take prerequisite courses for the Master of Information Technology and Management at a community college?

Yes, you can. Please contact us before you enroll to ensure that the classes you are taking will meet our requirements.

Are the entire degree programs available at the Rice Campus?

The entire Master of Information Technology and Management is available at the Rice Campus, and the entire Bachelor of Information Technology and Management degree program is available for transfer students at the Rice Campus.

Are the entire degree programs available at the Main Campus?

The entire Master of Information Technology and Management is available at the Main Campus although some classes may have to be completed online. Selected courses in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Management degree program are currently only available at the Rice Campus due to specialized laboratory requirements, so it is not currently possible to complete this degree without attending courses at the Rice Campus.

Are the programs accredited and by whom?

Illinois Institute of Technology is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the degrees presented are authorized by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. Additionally, portions of our program were accredited by the Association of Internet Professionals Certification Accreditation Council. There is not currently an external accreditation body specifically for Information Technology degree programs.

What is the typical class size?

Classes normally will not exceed twenty students but in many cases may be smaller.

Can I specialize in a particular area?

Yes! The Bachelor of Information Technology and Management offers seven specializations , while the Master of Information Technology and Management offers eight specializations.

Do I have to specialize in a particular area?

No! The specializations are intended to prepare you for particular roles in the IT working world, but all you have to do is complete the courses required for graduation. You can tailor a course of study that meets your specific needs, and there is a even a “General Course of Study” for those who would like a Master's degree with a broad overview of information technology.

Can I take courses other than the ITM courses?

This depends on your degree program. In the graduate program it may be possible to take some courses in other areas such as Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Technical Communications and Information Design, and the Stuart Graduate School of Business. Normally no more than two courses from other deparetments, or three from the Stuart Graduate School of Business, may be included in a graduate program of study. Undergraduates will need to take all of the required ITM courses as well as the required ITM electives so it is not likely you could take any other courses, although a variety of undergraduate finance and management courses are offered as electives in our program. In any case this will be determined through consultation with your advisor.

Do I need to have my own computer to take the courses?

We do not currently require students enrolled in the Information Technology & Management (ITM) degree programs to possess a notebook computer but we strongly believe it will enhance your student experience if you have one. We do have a Notebook Computer Specification available in .pdf format; this will ensure that if you do purchase a notebook computer it will fit with our requirements for software you may need to run in our courses.

What about software? Do I have to buy that?

The Center for Professional Development is a member of the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MDSNAA). As a member, we can provide Microsoft software which permits academic use of Microsoft operating systems and development tools by faculty and students at no cost to you (free!). The software include all current Microsoft operating systems, servers, and application development tools, and includes applications such as Windows XP and Visual Studio .Net. We also have available a wide variety of distributions of Linux, as well as other open source, freeware and shareware software tools for application, Web and multimedia development as well as utilities and even complete office application suites. More details on this free software is included with our Notebook Computer Specification. Other commercial software that you may desire to purchase is available to students at steep discounts just due to your student status.

Am I eligible for financial aid?

You may be; information on financial aid may be found on IIT's Financial Aid Office homepage. There is substantial financial aid available for most full-time undergraduate transfer students.

Is there on-campus employment available?

On-campus employment may be available at the Rice Campus on a limited basis; priority in hiring for employment at our Computer Center is given to those holding the A+ certification or equivalent (ITM 301). No employment is currently available at our Chicago Loop location but students in the program there may be eligible for employment at our Main or Downtown Campuses.

Since IIT's Center for Professional Development is a member of CompTIA (the Computer Trade Industry Association), our students may purchase examination vouchers for CompTIA certification exams at a significant discount.

Is there placement assistance for graduates?

Absolutely; Program Managers in our Professional Learning programs can assist you with placement, and you will have the full resources of IIT's Career Development Center to aid you in your job hunt as well.

For the Master's program, do I have to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)?

Not if your undergraduate degree is from a college or university in the United States with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0/4.0. If your degree is from a college or university outside the United States you must take the GRE.

If I am an international student do I have to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)?

If you are a prospective international student, you must submit TOEFL scores unless you are from an English speaking country, or received your undergraduate degree from U.S. institution or from an institution where the primary language of instruction was English. India is considered to be an english-speaking country for IIT TOEFL purposes. Students who take the TOEFL and are accepted with a marginal score will be required to take an English proficiency exam and may be required to take additional English courses at IIT.

When is the application deadline?

The deadlines for applications are:

• Fall Semester: June 1
• Spring Semester: November 1st
• Summer Semester: May 1st

You may apply and may be accepted after a deadline but there is no guarantee of an admission decision for applications received after these dates. If you are a US citizen or legal resident you may apply for admission as a non-degree student up to and including the first week of classes in each term, but if you are admitted in this manner you must apply for regular admission before you have completed six semester hours of courses.

Where can I live while attending classes?

The majority of courses in the ITM program are offered at our Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Campus in Wheaton, Illinois. If you do not already live in the Chicago area, it would be best for you to live in the immediate vicinity of the Rice Campus. Rice Campus does not have dormitories; however, there are a number of apartments within easy walking distance of the campus, as well as a wide variety of shopping and restaurants. If you would like housing information for the Rice Campus, please contact Pamela Stella, Facilities Manager, at stella@iit.edu or 630.682.6013. You can also live at IIT's Main Campus but you must bear in mind that while many courses are available at Main Campus or at our Chicago Loop location, some courses will only be available at the Rice Campus, which is not easily reached using public transportation. If you would like to live at IIT's Main Campus, housing information can be found through the Housing Office Web site at http://www.housing.iit.edu/.

How do I register for classes?

The easiest way to register for classes is online at http://webforsun.cns.iit.edu/ahomepg.htm. Your user name is your CWID, and your password is initially set to your birthdate in the YYMMDD format. You may also register in person at any IIT campus. Late registration fees begin the first day of the term. How does IIT identify students?

Each student is assigned an eight-digit Campus-Wide Identification Number, abbreviated as CWID which is also frequently referred to as your Student ID Number. (Each IIT Faculty and Staff member is assigned a CWID as well). This number will be sent to you in your acceptance letter from the Information Technology & Managment Degree program. Other identifiers for IIT students include a Unified-ID (U-ID) and an email/server username.
The Unified-ID is currently used to log into Blackboard and will eventually become a central login name for many IIT online services. It is generally the first letter of your first name followed by the first seven letters of your surname.
The email username, which also serves as your login username for our main UNIX server, hawk.iit.edu, is generally made up of the first four letters of your surname followed by first three letters of your first name. If there are other students with the same letter combination, your email username may have a number appended to the end as well. If a student's entire name is less than seven letters, then their username will be less than 7 letters. The email username, when followed by “@iit.edu”, makes up your email address at IIT.
You can look up your Unified-ID and your email address through the Student Unified-ID Search.

How does IIT communicate with students?

The primary method for university-to-student communication is through your IIT email. An email account is automatically set up for you when you are admitted. Your user name is generally the first four letters of your last name followed by the first three letters of your first name; the initial login password is the month and day of your birth date in MMDD format, followed by the last 4 digits of your CWID, i.e. MMDDXXXX where MMDD is the month and day of your birth date and XXXX is the last 4 digits of your CWID. For example, if you were born on July 4th, and your CWID is 12345678, your initial email password would be 07045678. It is very important that you either check your IIT student email regularly or forward your student email account to your primary email address. How do I access online courses?

Online resources for all IIT courses may be available through IIT Blackboard, and online course content is always on Blackboard. Go to http://blackboard.iit.edu/ to view general information and click on "login"; enter your Unified-ID and your password, which will initially be your CWID. Once you access the system, you should see a welcome page that lists your courses for the current semester. Click on the appropriate link to access course materials. To learn more about using Blackboard, visit http://iteam.iit.edu/resources/blackboard/bbstudent.html for the online tutorial. All problems with Blackboard should be directed to the OTS help desk at 312.567.DESK (3375); your instructors and the ITM staff cannot help with Blackboard problems.

Can I access my grades and my other IIT records online?

Yes, you can; almost every function of IIT student services is available online through Web for Students. You can use Web for Students to register for classes, view your current course schedule, make a tuition payment, check your account status, see your grades and change personal contact information.

• Go to http://webforsun.cns.iit.edu/ and click on Student Self Service (Web for Students). Once on the main page, click on ‘Login’.
• Enter your CWID; your PIN is preset to your birth date (YYMMDD). (For security reasons, it is strongly recommended that you change your preset PIN number once you are logged on).
• If you cannot register or drop courses, check for holds on your account.

Can I put up a Web page at IIT?

Certainly! Every student at IIT is given an account on our primary UNIX server, hawk.iit.edu. This also allows you to place a personal Web page on the IIT Web server, www.iit.edu. The address of your Web page will be http://www.iit.edu/~username/, where “username” is your Hawk username.
