    Gamma Nu Eta Fall 2013 Professional Members

    The following distinguised professional in the information technology industry was inducted as a Professional Member of Gamma Nu Eta by the Beta Chapter on Saturday, April 6, 2013:

    Dr. Gregory N. Hughes
    Professor of Information Technology and Web Science, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
    Greg Hughes is an educator and an executive with extensive experience leading a wide range of businesses and functional areas including Microelectronics, Manufacturing, Engineering, R&D, Product Management, Professional Services and Program Management. Dr. Hughes spent 26 years at AT&T and its successor Lucent Technologies in many capacities, most notably as Vice President for International Services and Program Management, President of the Transmission Systems Business, President of the Network Cable Systems Business and Vice President of the Microelectronics Interconnection Business. His experience spans a number of business and functional areas including R&D, manufacturing, marketing, professional services and program management. During AT&T's globalization, Mr. Hughes led AT&T's Transmission Systems Business in over 25 countries, and received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from President Bush in 1992. As a Professor of Information Technology and Web Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Hughes teaches IT capstone and managing IT. His specialties span a number of business and functional areas including R&D, manufacturing, marketing, professional services and program management; in his research he is pursuing the latest trends in information technology, e-Business and entrepreneurship. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Rensselaer and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton University. Dr. Hughes has played an active role in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute community by serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and as the first Vice Provost for Information Technology, and he was the founder of the Information Technology and Web Science degree programs at RPI. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Taconic Inc, DualAlign LLC, Raritan Inc, and Blue Slate Solutions.

    Gamma Nu Eta adopted the Greek letters of our name, ΓNH, in his honor.

    Ray Epich
    The Dean of Chicago CIOs
    As a pioneering executive in the information technology field, Ray Epich has been commonly accorded the title of "Dean of Chicago CIOs". In his most recent position with RiverPoint Technologies LLC, he specialized in the development and assessment of information systems, including detailed organization and planning studies to overall evaluations and functional system design efforts. He has guided executives in leveraging the value of the technology investments to achieve greater productivity, drive revenue and realize strategic business goals with clients that have included IBM, Citibank, Quaker Oats, General Foods, Sara Lee, Monsanto, Digital Equipment, Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, Detroit Edison, AON, Fidelity Bank, United Airlines, Cardinal Health and Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry. Prior to joining RiverPoint, Mr. Epich served as the interim CIO of Spherion, a multi-national Fortune 500 company specializing in consulting, staff augmentation, outsourcing and technology services. He has also held Vice President-level positions at a variety of organizations including the Diebold Group, Inc., a firm specializing in strategic planning for users of manufacturing and information technologies; Vice President, Management Information Systems for Northwest Industries, Inc.; and Vice President of the Information Systems Practice at the New York-based consulting firm Cresap, McCormick & Paget. Mr. Epich is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and also holds a Certificate with distinction in Data Processing from the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology and his Master of Science degree from the Sloan School Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a member of the first class to graduate from that program. He did further graduate studies at IIT's Stuart School of Business, where he also taught for several years.

    The following distinguised professionals in the information technology industry were inducted as Professional Members of Gamma Nu Eta by the Beta Chapter on Friday, May 6, 2011:

    Jean K. Holly
    Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Tellabs, Inc.
    Jean K. Holley has been executive vice president and chief information officer at Tellabs since 2005. In this role, she's responsible for developing and executing information technology (IT) strategies, solutions and operations. She directs all aspects of IT operations, production, application development, support and technical services for Tellabs worldwide. Before joining Tellabs in April 2004, Jean was the first CIO to lead and support global IT operations for USG Corp and prior to that served in various senior management capacities for Waste Management and its subsidiaries. Jean has also held positions with Digital Equipment Corporation and Inland Steel. She recieved her Master of Science degree in computer science/engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago and a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the Missouri University Science & Technology (formerly University of Missouri - Rolla). Jean is a member of the boards of trustees for IIT and the Missouri University Science & Technology. She served as president for the Computer Science Academy and currently serves on the Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy Fund Board. In 2008, Holley received the Julia Beveridge Award from IIT for her work to encourage students and young emerging talent to achieve their fullest potential. Also in 2008, Women in Technology International (WITI) recognized Holley with the Excellence in IT Leadership Award. In 2005, Holley was inducted into the Women in Science and Engineering Hall of Fame at Missouri University Science & Technology, and in 2004 she received an honorary professional degree.

    Dr. C. Robert Carlson

    Director, Information Technology and Management degree programs

    C. Robert Carlson is Dean of the School of Applied Technology at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Director of the Information Technology and Management degree programs and Professor of Computer Science. Bob is recognized for his innovations in both education and research. His is known for his development of several successful curriculum and innovative pedagogical approaches. As Dean of the School of Applied Technology he is actively engaged in the development of new educational programs and opportunities for both full time students and working professionals. He has held positions in industry in both research and applied roles at Bell Labs and Amoco. He was a member of the Computer Science faculty at the University of Illinois and became a professor at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1984. Prior to accepting his current appointment as a Dean and as Director of IIT's Rice Campus, he served as chair of the Computer Science Department at IIT and later as as Associate Dean of the Graduate College. Dr. Carlson has a distinguished record of publication and his work is cited in over thirty texts. Dr. Carlson earned his Bachelor's degree at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. His research interests include relational databases, database design tools and methodologies, multimodel information systems, distributed information systems, design units and design-driven software. His extensive research background has resulted in over 150 publications and 8 million dollars of funding. His pioneering research in both relational database design and software engineering has produced many techniques, models and software tools that have found their impact in industry and government practices. Bob's Testing Maturity Model (TMM) is recognized as a worldwide industry standard. Both Ms Holley and Professor Trygstad studied computer science under Dr. Carslon at IIT.

    Raymond E. Trygstad

    An Industry Professor of Information Technology and Management at Illinois Institute of Technology, Ray Trygstad teaches disaster recovery & business continuity, information security management, open source operating systems, cloud computing, and operating system virtualization. He serves as the Associate Director of IIT's Information Technology & Management (ITM) degree programs, and wrote the curricula currently in use for both the Bachelor and Master's Degree programs. Ray is also the Director of Information Technology for the IIT School of Applied Technology, where he is responsible for technology planning and computer system management and administration for the school. He is involved in cloud computing through IIT's participation in the Midwest Academic and Resilience Cloud Computing Consortium. He has taught Naval Science, Computer Science, Business, and Public Administration at IIT, and also guest lectured at the University of Chicago. Ray is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, and was designated a Computer Systems Management Subspecialist by the U. S. Navy, where he served as an Information Systems Manager and Information Systems Security Officer when he was not flying helicopters. In this capacity he did his first information systems security audit in 1988. He earned a Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Denver and has done Ph.D. Studies at Illinois Institute of Technology.
